General Information

Under this section you will find planning tools and information to help you, your family, school, business and/or local government create plans for coping with disasters and emergency situations.

While not all emergencies are widespread or long-lasting, the basic rule of preparedness is to ensure that you are prepared to care for yourselves for 3-5 days. Don't forget your pets and other animals! Because Marinette County is a mostly rural county, the majority of citizens are further removed from emergency service providers. They may not be able to reach you due to downed trees, flood waters or heavy snow. In cities and villages, emergency shelter may not be possible as it affects the shelter also.

"Get a Kit, Make a Plan, Stay Informed" information is quickly available at Ready Wisconsin. Check out the Media Gallery for video clips on a variety of subjects.

Iowa State University, College of Veterinary Medicine, has published an “All-Hazards Preparedness for Rural Communities” booklet as a “guide to help rural agriculture communities prepare for threats to their families, farms, animals and businesses”. You may download the entire booklet from the “Forms & Documents” link in the right column.

You also want to be prepared for a chemical emergency. Information specific to hazardous materials safety can be fount on our "LEPC and HazMat" sub-department pages.

Farms & Agriculture are businesses and many utilize chemicals in their operations. Farmers should have an emergency plan also, which should include a "Continuity of Operations Plan" (COOP). Where would you move your animals in the event your barn is destroyed or flooded? Who do you call if there's a fertilizer or herbicide spill? What happens if there is an animal disease outbreak? Your Farm Service Agency (FSA) and UW Extension Ag Agent can provide useful information.
Because of the potential for hazardous chemicals, i.e., fertilizers and herbicides, farmers may be subject to the Emergency Planning & Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA). Please visit our "LEPC & HazMat" pages for more information on how EPCRA can affect your farm.

Homeland Security: The world has changed since September 11, 2001.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security was created in response to the terrorist attacks that day. This federal department oversees a wide variety of programs that affect us all in some way or other. An example is the National Terrorism Advisory System (NTAS) that reflects the current threat level. Citizens can sign-up for alerts using email, Facebook and Twitter. NTAS replaces the color-coded Homeland Security Advisory System put into effect after 9/11. Travel security and the latest air-travel regulations can be found at their website also. The DHS website has a lot of information for everyone; citizens, business (including schools), first responders and local government.

In Wisconsin, the Office of Justice Assistance (OJA) disseminates homeland security information, such as grants, safe schools program, task force training and others.
